Preschool in Olney, MD 20832
The Children in the Shoe has been providing childcare for young children for more than 30 years, and we are excited to have this opportunity to tell you about our programs!
Our approach to the care of young children is developmental, creating environments which produce secure, well-adjusted children, who are eager and ready to learn. We encourage emotional intelligence through nurturing, kindness, verbal interaction, positive discipline, and encouraging empathy and conflict resolution skills. Our classrooms are rich in opportunities for learning language, math, nature, music, art, and social skills through play, exploration, and the use of carefully planned, age-appropriate materials and activities. Learn more about our classrooms and curriculum by age groups in other sections of this website.

Our two year old and preschool rooms are bright and sunny, and beautifully equipped. Our approach is primarily developmental, stressing social skills, exploration, discovery, independence, and creativity. Our teachers are enthusiastic, experienced and continuously trained. They are kind and nurturing.
Active play is at the heart of children’s learning. They need time to explore, grow physically, experience the world around them and understand it at their own pace. Based on these beliefs our curriculum is a child-centered, anti-bias approach blending Emergent Curriculum with active learning, using Developmentally Appropriate Practices. We add to this a focus on conflict resolution, which helps children build positive self-esteem and learn to use peaceful resolutions in problem solving and conflicts.
Our children’s days are filled with rich experiences in the arts, dramatic play, nature, math and language. We provide a Language Exposure Program (Olney/Spanish, East West/Spanish and our BCC Center is Spanish and Chinese) as well as a Music Program and Sports & Fitness Program. A well-balanced curriculum encourages active and imaginative free play.
