Light of the World Academy is a ministry of Shalom Lutheran Church. We believe that each child is a gift to us created and loved by God. We believe that learning is life long. Light of the World Academy provides a Christ-centered learning environment in which both children and parents feel welcome. We believe that education involves the whole person — emotionally socially intellectually spiritually and physically.
We believe in the uniqueness worth and dignity of the individual. We believe that positive self-image is basic to all learning. Our academic preschool kindergarten and elementary program are based on the philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori classroom is a prepared environment in which all children learn through an individualized approach. Children are provided with an atmosphere in which they will learn from their peers. They develop self-discipline and learn respect for each other and their environment. The children become self-motivated and self-directed and very independent as they work at their own individual academic level.
No child is stifled and no child is pushed to move on before he or she is ready. Under the guidance of a carefully trained teacher the students are challenged at their own individual levels. Light of the World Academy is equipped with a full range of specialized materials that encourage manipulations questions discovery and knowledge about the world. We stress the process of learning rather than the end result. Children learn not to fear mistakes instead viewing them as an opportunity for learning.
We believe that our focus in meeting the child’s needs helping him gain an inner discipline spiritual knowledge and respect for rights of others is preparing a child for life. At Light of the World Academy your child will be introduced to sensorial and practical life activities math reading art music geography computers foreign language science and spiritual education. The preschool curriculum at Light of the World Academy includes the following:
Practical Life – Teaches independence consideration coordination and order. Practical life activities help the children care for themselves and their environment learn social graces develop their fine motor skills and serve as building blocks to reading and writing. These materials deal with everyday life such as serving their own snacks washing dishes and watering plants – along with many more activities that teach them how to take care of their environment.
Sensorial – A child educates the senses through special Montessori materials. the child works with height depth geometric figures sound taste and other touch activities.
Math – This area is made up of hands-on learning materials that graphically show what is taking place in a given mathematical process. The educational materials allow students to learn abstract concepts clearly and concretely through the use of math materials.
Language – Beginning with reading readiness skills the child is introduced to phonics and later the blending of sounds vocabulary enrichment writing reading grammar and decoding skills.
Geography – Using a variety of maps and other materials our students will learn about all the different states countries and continents and will be introduced to the world’s many cultures languages animals and more.
Science – Our students will learn more about the world around them using a variety of Montessori materials and more.
Theater and music – Part of each day will be devoted to learning songs dances and more.
Spanish – To help introduce them to a foreign language or students will be taught a variety of worlds and phrases in Spanish.
