Coral Springs Montessori utilizes the philosophy and methodology developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. Born in Italy in 1870 she became the first female physician in Italy but gave up her medical practice to pursue her love of working with young children. Through scientific observation she studied and analyzed how children learn and she developed a curriculum using child-sized attractive didactic materials. She developed a teacher training program emphasizing how to set up a prepared environment for a child-centered mixed-age classroom with extensive training on the use and purpose of each Montessori lesson across the curriculum. Montessori teachers learn how to educate the whole child by developing not only academic skills but also:
independence
the love of learning
concentration
fine and gross motor skills
coordination
grace and courtesy
social skills
intrinsic motivation
self-discipline
conflict resolution
respect for others and for
their environment
In a Montessori classroom the children thrive when given the opportunity to enjoy uninterrupted work time using self-chosen developmentally appropriate materials. We see the absorbent mind in action as they learn and progress at their own pace neither rushed nor confined by expectations based solely on age.
