The Bnai Israel Schilit Nursery School aims to provide a caring, accepting atmosphere that promotes in children a love of learning and a desire to be successful in school, while concurrently developing the self-confidence necessary to meet new challenges. Jewish values, rituals, principles, and traditions are carefully woven into daily classroom life. We want each child to have the opportunity to grow at his or her own pace and for all children to learn everything they can, each in their own unique ways.
The B’nai Israel Schilit Nursery School is accredited by the State of Maryland and is affiliated with the Board of Jewish Education. We have received the Gold Award from the USCJ Seaboard Region for Excellence in Nursery Education. We are also proud to be a Board of Jewish Education Commended School for Jewish Early Childhood Education.

The Schilit Nursery School enables young children to play, learn, and grow together in a Jewish environment. Jewish values, rituals, principles, and traditions are carefully woven into daily classroom life. Our developmentally appropriate curriculum supports the growth of young children and encourages an interest in learning by promoting independence, building self-esteem, stimulating creativity, and developing problem-solving skills. The curriculum also includes celebrating Jewish holidays and preparing for Shabbat; Hebrew language; becoming familiar with Jewish ritual objects and symbols; reciting appropriate blessings; Jewish values; and music, movement, art, and creative play within a Jewish context. We bring Israel into our classrooms each day through art, music, dance, stories, traditions, and customs.
Our teachers, the foundation of our quality school program, are well-versed in child development, both by educational training and relevant experience. They share a love of children and a commitment to introducing children to a supportive, creative Jewish learning environment. We are proud of our high retention rate as our teachers return year after year.
Parent education is also an important part of our nursery school. Parent Education classes taught by our rabbi and consultants in the field of early childhood education provide resources and support in raising our children.
The nursery school children interact with the synagogue staff through music with Cantor Josh C. Perlman and Cantor Ilana Wolpert, holiday stories with Rabbi Michael Safra, Hebrew language and Bible stories with Morah Sharon Safra, Israeli folk dancing with Morah Melissa Schwartz, and library time with our librarian, Jill Gendelman.
