Our Preschool has been in existence since 1983 and has grown from a group of mothers enjoying a morning playgroup to an integral part of the ministry of First Baptist Church.
The school offers small classroom size so that student/teacher ratio is at its best. The classes all offer typical preschool activities of art, singing, fingerplays, and dramatic play with the 4 to 5 year olds stressing kindergarten preparation. The school also integrates Christian stories, fingerplays and songs throughout its weekly activities.
Throughout the year the children participate in a variety of local field trips which include Savoy Fire Station, Curtis Orchard, Champaign Public library, and the Orpheum Children’s Museum. The parents assist with the transportation for these trips and are welcome in the classes. To help make the winter month go a little faster the school also adds in some fun days like Pajama Day, Clifford Day, and Pizza Day.
The student body has included not only children from the Savoy area but from White Heath, Mahomet, Fithian, Monticello as well as Champaign/Urbana. As the Savoy area has grown over these past years, the school has continued to receive more and more inquiries for spaces for children and has often had to maintain a waiting list. The Church and the School Board finally decided that the school would open up an afternoon session to try to meet this growing need.
The school also tries to be an active part of the communities by having several service projects throughout the school year: Christmas toy donations to local ministries for needy families, Thanksgiving dinners donated from each class for distribution by the Salvation Army, hosting Kid’s Zone at Walmart Fun Fest for children’s cancer research.
