Under the sponsorship of the University of Washington, the University of Washington Children’s Center at West Campus was built in 1996 to serve the children of University of Washington staff and faculty. The center includes one room each for infant, toddler and preschool aged children. West Campus is a Montessori-based early childhood program and is licensed for 44 children. The on-site Program Director is Julia Neely.
Our philosophy is based on Maria Montessori’s principals for early care and education. We believe that children grow and learn best in a warm, nurturing, well-organized environment. Our teachers are sensitive and respectful to each child’s individuality and encourage each child to develop a joyful confidence with which to explore our constantly changing world. We welcome a multicultural community of families and are committed to supporting this diversity in all areas of our early childhood program.
A relationship of mutual respect and support between parents and teachers promotes a positive environment for children.

The University of Washington Children’s Center at West Campus is an early childhood program based on the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. We believe that a child’s most critical learning period occurs during the first six years of life. In support of these crucial years we emphasize an environment in which children experience positive social relationships and age-appropriate activities. Children are cared for by adults who demonstrate respect, patience and a thorough understanding of child development.
At West Campus children are encouraged and helped to:
- Develop their natural enthusiasm for learning
- Grow in self-confidence and independence
- Develop self-discipline and inner motivation
- Be caring and respectful, nurturing themselves as well as others
A guiding principal of Montessori philosophy is “Follow the child.” Our staff uses the interests and needs of the children as their guide in creating their learning environment. It is prepared to be developmentally appropriate and interesting, stumulating problem solving and creativity. Within this prepared environment children are able to move about at will, make choices and build skills toward competence and independence.
We believe children need to feel loved, accepted and secure. Children want to know there is someone available to help when needed. By cherishing children for whom they are and nuturing the natural joy in learning, we provide the framework in which intellectual, emotional and social development build on one another.
We honor the cultural and national diversity represented by the families in our programs. Our goal is to support children in their similarities and their family has an important place in the community at University of Washington Children’s Center at West Campus.
