Based on developmental readiness-
Head Start provides a learning rich environment that allows the children to progress academically at their own individual pace. The lesson plans and activities are designed to meet the needs of the children individually and collectively. The activities are child directed which means that the needs and interests of the individual child are considered in daily planning in order to insure success.

Creative experiences with language and music-
Head Start encourages creativity and self expression through the use of music and language. The needs of each ethnic group in the classroom are met by making available materials in their native language. There are pictures, books and other materials that reflect the many faces of Head Start. Music is a big part of the daily schedule and is used to communicate basic skills such as counting, colors, etc. The children learn songs and finger plays and are given the opportunity to move and dance each day.

Positive friendships with adults and children-
The Head Start teaching staff greets the children and their parents warmly each day. The adults are role models for the children and understand that they will imitate what they experience. The teachers offer one on one instruction and provide a nurturing environment for the children that foster positive self esteem and strong relationships. The children are given the tools to resolve their own conflicts in a productive manner.
