Cupertino Cooperative Nursery School has been helping families and the community since its inception in March 1953 by a group of parents searching for a new way to begin their childrens education. They began with morning sessions and a weekly night meeting for parents at the Cupertino Youth Center In 1955 CCNS was included in the Adult Education program of the Fremont Union High School District. It has been at the present site for 19+ years. The school is affiliated with the Local (SCVC) and State (CCPPNS) Councils of Cooperative Nursery Schools. The multi-room school and large backyard area afford a wonderful environment for learning and social development.
Through the years Cupertino Co-op has witnessed a lot of changes but its spirit has remained constant. Technology has affected our surroundings and the pace of life yet Cupertino Co-op has remained an oasis for our children. Much of this stability is due to our Directors and teachers who have served our school for long periods of time. Since the founding of CCNS 50+ years ago we have had only 4 directors.
Cupertino Co-op was the first childcare center in Sunnyvale to be accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAEYC).

Children can only realize their fullest potential if they are able to develop a positive self-image. At Cupertino Cooperative Nursery School (CCNS) we believe children thrive in our environment where there are confident people who like understand and respect them and a safe stimulating and supportive environment for them in which to learn and grow.
We believe that play is the most effective means available to young children to accomplish integration and growth. Our goal is to provide the time space materials and guidance needed by children to optimize their play experience.
We offer preschoolers…
- A relaxed environment in which they can learn to cooperate share and form friendships with peers.
- Caring adults. Our average child to adult ratio is 3:1. That ensures there is abundant individual attention for each child.
- Abundant creative play and movement exploration opportunities to develop physical and mental skills. (Sand mud and water painting and cooking arts and crafts carpentry puzzles and games.)
- An introduction to more formalized learning. Our preschoolers begin to explore the worlds of science music and drama of colors numbers letters and shapes.
- Field trips. Frequent field trips to diverse and exciting places such as a farm bakery planetarium museum and even a ride on a train familiarize the preschoolers with a larger world
