The Early Childhood Center was built in 1960 and opened as Gregory Hill Elementary School. In 1989, the district decided to turn it into a preschool. It began with 4 morning and afternoon tuition classes with a total of 160 students. Each class had 20 students. There were also 3 Title 1 classes and one self-contained Special Education class with 12 students. At times the other classes integrated with the tuition class.
In 1989, there were 274 four-year-old students in 8 classrooms. After a couple of years, the school added more tuition classes because of the demand for early childhood education.
In 1993, The Early Childhood Center integrated the tuition, Title 1 and Special Education classes.
In 1995, they started working with the Colorado Preschool Program which funds schools who serve higher-need communities. They require that there are only 15 children in a classroom instead of 20 so the amount of students within the school dropped dramatically. This was the also the year that the Early Childhood Center started the three-year-old program.
In 2000, the Early Childhood Center hired its first Principal, Susan Blatter. Until then, the school was managed by rotating principals. Susan was the principal until 2003 when Mat Aubuchon was hired as the Principal and Preschool Coordinator for the entire district.
