Southern Maryland Christian Academy recently took part in a pajama drive designed to collect pajamas for children in preparation of the coming winter months. Developed through the partnership of the Pajama Program Foundation and Scholastic, this drive seeks to raise poverty awareness among local systems while meeting childrens needs.
Over the course of two weeks, ninety-two SMCA students, grades K-2 through K-5, participated in the drive and managed to collect sixty-five pairs of pajamas. SMCA will send these pajamas away where they will be packaged, along with a book, and delivered to those houses and families who need them.
Throughout the drive, the young students demonstrated excited generosity in helping to meet the needs of others, and SMCA believes that activities such as these are what help students to learn the power and joy of giving as well as the benefits of working together towards a common goal. Given the success and abundance of this years donations, SMCA plans to make the pajama drive a yearly tradition, seeking to do its part in giving as many children as possible the clothing and books that they need.

Our academic curriculum uses the resources of A Beka and Making Connections in designing the course study for our elementary grades. Subjects begun in Pre-K, such as phonics, language development, science, and penmanship, are expounded upon in our elementary curriculum. Core subjects taught include Bible, language, phonics, mathematics, spelling, science, history, reading, and penmanship. Early elementary expands the Pre-K academic vision and reinforces positive work habits while continuing to strengthen fine motor skills introduced in the Pre-K years, a foundation proven to have a positive effect on test and SAT scores.
