Violinist Philip O. has held positions as a member or freelancer with various professional symphony orchestras around the country including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Tulsa Symphony, Amarillo Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, and many others. He has also performed in hundreds of public concerts and functions as a soloist and an ensemble musician in Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and North Carolina.
Philip holds a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance from University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of the Crouse String Quartet, Concertmaster of the university symphony orchestra, and a graduate violin teaching assistant. His Bachelor of Music degree is from Western Michigan University. As a competitive chamber ensemble musician in music school he was invited to perform in public quartet masterclasses for various world renowned string quartets including the Tokyo Quartet, the Julliard Quartet, the Belcea Quartet, The Pacifica Quartet, the Miro Quartet, and numerous others.
Past violin teachers have included several members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, OU Professor Hal Grossman, and University of Michigan professor Stephen Shipps. Philip himself has been teaching violin professionally for 12 years. His interest in teaching began at a very young age, as he grew up helping instruct his younger siblings in violin and cello. In addition to teaching from his home and local music schools in North Carolina, Philip has also held a variety of other teaching positions. He was a violin teaching assistant at the University of Oklahoma, helping instruct violinists in the university music school, and he has instructed private, group, and ensemble classes for music camps and events in Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas.
Currently Philip lives in Durham, NC with his wife, Yanjing, a scientist who also plays violin on the side. They regularly play together in weddings, receptions, parties, and other special events. Philip is a sub with the Greensboro Symphony and is teaching in the Raleigh-Durham area from his home and as a private and group instructor with Cary School of Creative Arts, Little Arts & Smarts, and has also taught regularly at The Musicians Learning Center in Raleigh.
Recitals & Other Performance Opportunities:
There are two full studio recitals held each year as well as various other performance opportunities provided throughout the year. Students are highly encouraged to perform in the full studio recitals, and they are always welcome to participate in any of the regular performance opportunities.
