A Math teacher can start by telling students the formal rules for how to manipulate an equation instead he got my son to solve them using simpler techniques (Ex., guessing and checking). After a while he made him realize there should be an easier way, explains why the formal math was developed, helps him understand how to apply it and how it is related to the other ideas. Lowell showed the wonder of extracting a simple answer from a seemingly difficult questions and the beauty of tools that help one do this. He taught the subject effectively by teaching and learning as a collaborative process and it was a good motivation for my son to be working with his teacher to develop his understanding. Overall, I am glad to have found Lowell and my son mentioned to me after the class "If only all Math teachers are like Mr.Lowell!"
