I had no prior Chinese experience when I started lessons with Jim, but I wanted to complete the equivalent of an intro college course in Mandarin so that upon returning to school, I could test out of the intro course and continue with the next level of Chinese. Jim has accommodated the Mandarin textbook that my school uses ('New Practical Chinese Reader'), but has also challenged me with practical Mandarin phrases that he deems useful in daily conversation. We meet in person for two hours a week, but Jim is also communicative by email, and will often email me short dialogues for me to decipher before our next meeting. Primary benefits of lessons with Jim is that as a native speaker he can critique my pronunciations and supply contextual usage of Chinese words and phrases.
