Hi! My name’s Dan, and I’m a saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, teacher, and avid learner of pretty much everything!
I just received my Advanced Music Studies Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, adding to my Master’s in Music from Duquesne University (also in Pittsburgh), and my Bachelor’s in Music from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. My teachers have been classical tenor sax pioneer James Houlik, retired Air Force Bandsman Keith Young, international soloist Greg Banaszak, and famed jazz arranger and saxophonist Mike Tomaro.
In addition to studying classical and jazz saxophone, I’ve also done extra work learning flute and clarinet and tutoring music theory, history, and composition. I’ve played in orchestras and big bands, and Beatles cover bands, musical pits, free jazz collectives – you name it!
As a soloist, I have been a guest lecturer and recitalist at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium and the winner of the Carnegie Mellon University Concerto Competition. My chamber groups have been the winners of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Competition, quarter-finalists in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and guest presenters at TedX events. I’ve also given lectures on various musical topics at the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning.
I love to learn, and my interests don’t stop with music! I know a good deal of Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Japanese, I can identify most species of birds in the US by sight and song, and I can name and locate every country in the world. I just love to learn, and I hope I can pass that love on to my students!
