Raised in New Orleans, I became fluent in Portuguese during four years of residence in Brazil. In July 2005, only five months after having arrived in Brazil, I received a CELPE-Bras Certificate (CELPE-Bras is the only Portuguese proficiency exam for non-native speakers that’s recognized by the Brazilian government). Soon after, property investors from Australia, England and the United States began to hire me as an interpreter.
