I am a first generation Italian-American on my mother’s side. Most of her family is in Italy, and we have always maintained a close connection. As such, I have been to Italy many times, not only on the tourist path, but off that beaten path: in my relatives’ dining rooms, at their weddings and funerals, working in their fields harvesting grapes, etc. In college, I majored in Italian, even spending a semester in Rome.
