My name is Berthe ( pronounced Bert). At the age of 4, I began taking
piano lessons. By age 8, I was performing for the first time at the
Assembly Hall of the American University of Beirut. In 1978, I attended
the Faculty of Music of the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik/Lebanon,
where I completed a PhD. in music education and a higher diploma in
piano.
From 1982 to 2000, I taught piano, music theory, music education,
music appreciation, and the history of and analysis of Western music
at the University of the Holy Spirit of Kaslik (USEK), The University of St.
Joseph (USJ) and the Lebanese University (UL).
I recorded my first CD “Rehna Meshouar”, a collection of Lebanese
songs for children, intended to introduce music to kids. I took part in
many educational activities and devoted myself to the promotion of
musical education to the children. In 1995, I published my first book
“Do-Mi-Sol”, that focuses on a method specifically designed to teach kids
Solfege (oral theory and ear training).
From 1998 to 2001 I was in charge of training aspiring music teachers
at the Ecole Normale in piano, music education, psychology of music
education, and the philosophy of music education.
By the year 2000,I was appointed Director of Studies and the Academic
Secretary of the Music Faculty at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik.
During my tenure, I employed teachers, advised students, and
developed artistic and academic programs. It was my responsibility to
organize studies and examinations, as well as plan, execute, organize studies and examinations, as well as plan and execute
concerts, conventions, and competitions. I have lectured all over Europe and the Middle East, as well as published many articles concerning music and music education.
Since moving to Florida in 2007, I am a professor of piano instruction at St. Petersburg College. I also give private lessons in my studio. I have served as a judge several times at the Bay Ridge Piano Festival.
I believe in a dynamic and responsive method of teaching. I see the student as an active participant in their own learning. Our lesson feels pleasant and joyful, so the student will always delight in playing the piano and creating music. Based on the student’s age and demands, I employ several methods of teaching that lead to the development of observation, concentration, creativity, self-confidence, and personal expression. I encourage and support my students regardless of specific talent, as we move toward an effective and beneficial musical experience.
