In 1996 as a substitute teacher, I encountered a 7th grade student crying and no one knew what was bothering her. I recognized that she was speaking Brazilian Portuguese and I knew some, so I helped translate. The school and the district was so appreciative that they hired me to teach English (ESOL/ESL) to the large Brazilian student population that had enrolled during the past year.
