Mathematics & More
I am a retired CSUB Mathematics Instructor with many years of experience both teaching and tutoring mathematics. I have taught everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, Teacher Education and Business Math. I know how to present topics using a range of different approaches, depending on the student, and how to break topics down to make them understandable. I emphasize conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization of techniques, because when a student understands “Why?”, remembering …
Testimonials
Melissa K. from Tehachapi, CA Mrs. S. is always very positive and patient. She also is forward thinking about when tests are coming up and schedules conflict.
Elizabeth U. from Tehachapi, CA Virginia has been the first teacher/instructor/tutor to help me to truly understand math concepts when I need clarification. I have a great appreciation for the hard work she has put into helping me fill in the holes in my understanding that have caused me to struggle through algebraic problems for years. Virginia's background as a teacher definitely comes through when we sit down for tutoring sessions. I have had other students who understand the concepts try to show me how to work problems, but it seems that there is no comparison to a person who has spend time as an educator. I am now an online college student getting into my Calculus courses. If I didn't have a tutor like Virginia, I feel that I would not have the means to get through my courses. When complex ideas are presented in a book and the fundamentals seems abstract, I have a very difficult time grasping the material. I am a visual learner, and this is not especially compatible with online courses. I have consistently struggled through all of my math courses because I have a tough time understanding without direct explanations. The best part of working with Virginia is that she can see the exact part of the material that is giving me trouble and then provide a detailed explanation with examples and pictures. Because I have a hard time with not making direct connections quickly, I often ask her, "Can you tell me why it works this way?" She always seems to provide a good solid explanation, and I get a little more confident in my own understanding. I would definitely recommend Virginia. I feel like she has been the primary source of instruction for my online Trigonometry and Calculus classes. These were both very tough subjects for me, and I don't think that I could continue with them in the online format if it wasn't for Virginia. She is saving me the trip down to Bakersfield or Lancaster where I would have to work around a school's schedule to take these courses in house.
