The children at Little Blessings take part in a living Christian environment where they are participating in service to others; learning how to get along with all kinds of children; discovering the special qualities in themselves as well as their classmates; knowing Jesus and experiencing God as a part of their everyday lives; and mastering the skills that will help them succeed in the public schools. It is a nurturing preschool that accepts children exactly where they are in their development and life experience; thus promoting their social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth so that harmony can be experienced in living with each other and the rest of God’s creation.
At Little Blessings, we uniquely use both an academic and a religious curriculum. Our academic curriculum, based on seasonal theme planning, prepares the children for kindergarten using the Illinois State Board of Education Early Learning Standards as a guide. The faith curriculum is Jerome Berryman’s “Godly Play,” which uses a careful telling of Biblical stories from the Old and New Testament, engaging figures for each story, and creative activities to encourage children to seek answers to their faith questions.
Our program enables children to learn from participation in guided classroom experiences and in relationship-building skills. Children will experience spiritual growth, as well as growth in communication; expression through music, movement, drama and art; responsibility for their own wellness; and in understanding the world in qualitative and quantitative terms. Our music program is based on the philosophy of the nationally known Musikgarten program.
Special events during the year include a presentation in December, Little Blessings Shares the Christmas Story, a childrens re-enactment of the birth of Jesus. That month is capped off with a Little Blessings outreach; gathering food and gifts for those in emotional or material need outside of our preschool family. We also host A Day with Dad, Mothers Day Celebrations, parent conferences, curriculum night and a book fair in November, as well as an end of the year family celebration before we close for the summer.
As we have grown, we have stressed our ministry is not only to provide a high quality program for children; but also to minister to families in the needs they encounter on their parenting journey. Hence, in being called “Little Blessings”, we are a blessing to others.
