It’s no secret that most preschool teachers wish they made more. Many feel underpaid and under appreciated. But this is a common theme among nearly all in the teaching industry. So is the average preschool teacher salary compared to all teacher salaries actually more or less?
Well, as it turns out, when we look at a preschool teacher salary compared to all teacher salaries, across the board, preschool teachers typically make less. The average classroom teacher makes $37,000 per year, while the average preschool teacher makes only $22,000. A preschool sub makes $21,000 while substitute teachers in elementary, middle and high schools average $27,000. The most dramatic difference? In principals. The head of a preschool averages an annual salary of $31,000 while principals make more like $94,000.
So, at the end of the day, a preschool teacher salary compared to all teacher salaries gets the short end of the stick. But look on the bright side. Preschool teachers get the joy of working with the youngest learners, often the most enthusiastic and the most fun. After all, while salaries are important, money isn’t everything.
